The Manufacture des Gobelins features several buildings where craftsmen create tapestries using traditional weaving techniques on wooden looms dating from the 17th century.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert transformed the Gobelins family dye works into a state-run tapestry factory in 1662, appointing Charles Le Brun as the first director.
The factory produced 775 tapestries between 1663 and 1690, including representations of Louis XIV military victories and scenes from classical mythology.
Located at 42 Avenue des Gobelins, visitors can observe craftsmen at work during guided tours offered three afternoons per week by appointment.
The Galerie des Gobelins displays temporary exhibitions of tapestries and furniture from Mobilier National in a building constructed by Auguste Perret in 1937.
