Villandry, commune in Indre-et-Loire, France
Villandry is a commune located in central France in the department of Indre-et-Loire. The commune is a popular destination for tourists due to the grandiose château of Villandry located within its borders. The origin of Villandry dates back to the early Middle Ages, when the commune was a feudal stronghold owned by the lords of Villandry. The second and current château of Villandry was constructed in the early 16th century by the builder Jean le Breton and the lord of the castle, Jean de la Vergne, who wanted to modernize the castle. The castle, a symbol of the elegance and power of the Renaissance period, is made up of four distinct structures, including a grand central pavilion, two rectangular pavilions at the ends and a low wall with large French gardens serving as a background. The castle's façade is surrounded by an elegant moat and is enclosed by wrought iron gates and a stone wall. The interior is styled in the classic theatricality of the Renaissance and has a number of interesting features and decorations. The entry hall is large and elaborately decorated, with large and heavily decorated colums and stucco-laden walls, and a central stone staircase. The adjoining ballroom, decorated with painted ceilings and tiles, contains one of the finest collections of Renaissance furniture and art. The castle's main attraction is the terraced gardens laid out between the pavilions and the moat. An upper terrace contains terraced box hedge maze, a lemon tree lined oval, an herb garden and an alpine garden. A lower terrace contains a pool and six gardens containing various flowers and plants from around the world. The six gardens are laid out in three sections - the kitchen garden, the color garden, and the fragrant garden. Today, the Château de Villandry is open to visitors and is one of the most popular attractions in the region. The beautiful and lavish gardens, the well-preserved interior and the air of antiquity make it a perfect tourist destination.
