Abbaye de Baumgarten

The Abbaye de Baumgarten is a Cistercian abbey southeast of Bernardvillé and west of Reichsfeld in the Bas-Rhin region. The monastery sits amid vineyards and contains buildings that serve the religious and daily needs of its resident community.

The abbey was founded in 1148 when Bishop Cunon de Michelbach of Strasbourg established the foundation for this community. After nearly 500 years of absence, monastic life returned to this location and renewed its religious function.

The community here follows daily liturgical prayer and singing rooted in Cistercian traditions that shape the residents' way of living. Visitors can join prayer times and experience the rhythm of monastic life directly.

The monastery sat empty for nearly 500 years before being revived in 2009 and becoming a living place of prayer once again. This revival brought female Cistercian spirituality back to the Alsace region, where such communities had once flourished.
