The Saint-Michel-des-Lions church features a prominent bell tower adorned with a metal sphere measuring two meters in diameter and weighing 600 kilograms.
Construction of the church began in 1364 following two devastating fires in 1123 and 1147 that destroyed the original structure from the 7th century.
The church houses the skull of Saint Martial and holds regional religious ceremonies every seven years during the Ostensions of Limoges.
The church maintains regular visiting hours and offers guided tours highlighting its architectural elements, including the four stone lions at its entrance.
In 2023, Pope Francis elevated the church to the status of minor basilica, making it the only basilica in the Limousin region.
