Commanderie de Savigny-le-Temple, commandry located in Seine-et-Marne, in France

Welcome to the Savigny-le-Temple Commandery, an ancient Templar and Hospitaller commandery located in the Bourg district of Savigny-le-Temple, France. This historic site is situated in the western part of Seine-et-Marne, 51 km southeast of Paris and 8 km northwest of Melun. The commandery was founded after King Louis VII returned from his crusade in 1149. He was accompanied by a contingent of Templars who proved to be effective against Turkish attacks in Asia Minor. In gratitude for their service, Louis VII gave the Templars his lands in Savigny-sur-Melun and all their dependencies. This act of donation was made in Orléans and consisted of nineteen handwritten lines in Latin. The king also granted them an annual rent of 30 pounds, to be taken from the census he collected in Étampes. The document was authenticated by the signatures of witnesses, the king's monogram, and his seal. In addition to the royal lands, other donations enriched the commandery. The Saint-Leu pond and mill were given in 1164 by the abbot of Saint-Port. The Saint-Germain church became the possession of the commandery in 1168. In 1194, Gaudefroy de Nandy, a crusader from the region who was besieging Saint-Jean-d'Acre, donated a "land with two plows" in the territory of Savigny, near Nandy or any other place at the Templars' discretion. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the commandery, which include the remains of the church, the tower, and the gatehouse. The site offers a glimpse into the history of the Templars and their role in the Crusades. Guided tours are available, providing visitors with a detailed account of the commandery's history and significance. In addition to the commandery, visitors can also explore the Bourg district of Savigny-le-Temple. This charming area is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes, as well as historic buildings and landmarks. Visitors can stroll through the streets, taking in the sights and sounds of this picturesque town. Overall, the Savigny-le-Temple Commandery is a must-see destination for history buffs and anyone interested in the legacy of the Templars. With its rich history and stunning architecture, it offers a unique glimpse into the past and an unforgettable experience for visitors.
