Greniers Saint-Jean d'Angers, Medieval granary in Doutre district, Angers, France
The Greniers Saint-Jean is a medieval storage building with thick stone walls and sturdy wooden beams that show its original purpose as a provision house. It features large windows and sits on the banks of the Maine River, where it now functions as a modern event venue.
This building was constructed in the 12th century as part of the Saint-Jean Hospital complex and served as a storage facility for food and supplies. Over the centuries it maintained its storage role but later underwent modern changes to serve the community.
The building shows how religious institutions organized the city's food supply in medieval times and what role storage facilities played in daily life. Its walls tell of the connection between church and community that existed here for centuries.
The site sits in the Doutre district right by the river and is walkable from downtown, making it easy to combine with other local sights. The interior offers event space, and parking and basic facilities for visitors are available.
The building was converted into a vaccination center starting in January 2021 during the pandemic, showing how historical sites can quickly adapt to modern needs. This dual use highlighted the flexibility and importance of the space for the city.
