Piliers de Tutelle

The Piliers de Tutelle consisted of twenty-four columns arranged in a rectangular formation, measuring 30 meters long and 20 meters wide, with a total height of 26 meters.

Built during the third century in Roman Bordeaux, the temple structure stood at the southwest corner of what is now the Grand Theatre until its demolition in 1677.

The monument featured detailed architectural elements, including an architrave and arcade crowning decorated with bas-reliefs depicting caryatids and other Roman motifs.

The location of the ancient temple is marked by street names and archaeological findings, with architectural blocks discovered during excavations in the early 2000s.

Arab geographer Al-Himyari documented the monument in the 9th century, describing it as a grand building prominently positioned above the Bordeaux landscape.
