Sarrasinières, Underground conduits in Lyon and Rillieux-la-Pape, France
Two parallel limestone galleries spanning 13 kilometers connect Lyon to Miribel through underground passages measuring 1.9 meters in width with 80-centimeter-thick walls.
Archaeological excavations in 2019 revealed these passages date from the first century BC to first century AD, contrary to previous assumptions about medieval origins.
The name of these galleries derives from either Latin arcus-cæsariani or references to Moors who occupied the region during the eighth century.
Recent structural assessments indicate deterioration from railway construction and flooding caused by the Pierre-Bénite dam construction in the 1960s.
The network contains rectangular chambers at intervals, featuring dual or triple vaulted ceilings connected by square wells along specific sections.
