Fontaine Delille, 19th century fountain in Place Delille, Clermont-Ferrand, France.
Fontaine Delille is a fountain on Place Delille that rises in layers from a circular stone basin. Six carved putti figures surround the structure, playing with dolphins while lion heads and iron details decorate its surfaces.
Construction finished in 1875 and connected three elevated sources to feed an underground brick reservoir beneath the square. This system originally supplied water to the Carmes cemetery beyond the fountain.
The French government designated the fountain as a protected historical monument in 2007, recognizing its architectural and technical importance to Clermont-Ferrand.
This fountain sits on Place Delille in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from most areas. It remains accessible year-round and offers a quiet spot for a brief stop.
Beneath the fountain lies a vaulted brick chamber supported by four thick central pillars that hold up the entire structure above. This hidden underground architecture was essential for storing and managing the water supply.
