Christ in Majesty in Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, mosaic by Luc-Olivier Merson

Welcome to the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur in Paris, one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. This beautiful basilica is located on the hill of Montmartre and was built over a period of 50 years, starting in 1875. The church is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is a must-visit for anyone interested in religious history and art. One of the highlights of the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur is the Christus in majesteit mosaic, which is one of the largest in the world. Designed by French artist Luc-Olivier Merson in 1911, the mosaic depicts the Majestas Domini, or the risen Christ returning, standing on clouds or seated on a throne. This theme has been used for centuries in frescoes, paintings, and mosaics, with examples such as the Cimabue mosaic in the Pisa Cathedral. Merson's mosaic is almost 475 square meters in size, with only the head of Christ measuring 2 meters high. The enamel and partly gilded mosaic consists of around 25,000 stones and was created between 1918 and 1922 in the Guilbert-Martin workshop in Saint-Denis. Merson was assisted by architect Lucien Magne, but after their deaths, Merson's students Henri-Marcel Magne and Marcel Imbs took over the execution of the work. The Christus in majesteit mosaic is a stunning example of the veneration of France and the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart. It is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists who worked on it, and its unveiling in November 1923 was a momentous occasion. When you visit the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, make sure to take the time to admire this incredible work of art. The central figure of Christ, barefoot and dressed in a long robe, is a powerful symbol of faith and devotion. As you gaze upon the mosaic, you can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty and majesty of this masterpiece.
