Donjon du Château de Vincennes

The Donjon rises 52 meters above ground with thick stone walls, rectangular towers at each corner, and multiple defensive architectural elements throughout its structure.

Construction began in 1361 under Charles V of France, transforming the original hunting lodge into the tallest medieval fortified structure in Europe at that time.

The Donjon contains multiple floors of preserved medieval chambers, including the royal apartments where French monarchs conducted state affairs through the centuries.

Visitors can access the Donjon through guided tours departing from the main entrance of Château de Vincennes, with tickets available at the reception desk.

The keep served as a state prison where notable figures including Denis Diderot and Marquis de Sade spent time behind its fortified walls.
