Le Doyenné d'Avranches

The Grand Doyenné features thick walls measuring 2.28 meters, double-splayed openings, and a vaulted cellar supported by pillars reaching 4.2 meters in height.

Built around 1200 for Hasculf de Subligny, lord of Avranches, the building served as a lordly residence before becoming the seat of the deanery until the French Revolution.

The structure exhibits architectural elements from multiple periods, including 15th and 16th-century mullioned windows on its north facade and 18th-century interior woodwork.

Located at 26 rue d'Auditoire in Avranches, the Grand Doyenné measures 22.65 meters long by 9.4 meters wide, with public access available since 2000.

A 12th-century spiral staircase known as Saint-Gilles connects the cellar to upper floors through the 2.28-meter-thick medieval walls.
