Kaimaktsalan, Mountain summit at Florina Municipality, Greece and Novaci Municipality, North Macedonia
Kaimaktsalan is a granite mountain reaching approximately 2500 meters that marks the border between Greece and North Macedonia. The peak sits above vast territories on either side, making it a prominent geographical landmark in the region.
A major World War I battle took place here in September 1916 when Serbian forces defeated Bulgarian troops. This victory gave the Serbs control over a strategically important mountain position.
An Orthodox chapel dedicated to Saint Peter stands at the summit with a memorial crypt honoring fallen soldiers. The site serves as a place of remembrance for visitors who make the journey to the peak.
A ski center on the mountain operates multiple runs suited for different ability levels, with separate areas for snowboarding and snow tubing. Weather conditions change rapidly with altitude, so visitors should prepare accordingly for the mountain environment.
The name comes from Ottoman Turkish, where it refers to clotted cream, likely describing the snow-covered peak. This linguistic detail reveals how historical trade routes and cultural influences shaped the region's geographical names.
