Korkia-Maura ice cave

The cave extends 15 meters in length with varying widths from 1 to 3.5 meters and heights between 1.5 to 4 meters, containing permanent ice formations.

During the 17th century, Päiviö Vuolab frequented this cave while conducting activities that led to the destruction of sacred Sámi locations in the region.

Local fishermen from Lake Inarijärvi traditionally used this cave as a natural refrigeration system to preserve their daily catch throughout different seasons.

Visitors can reach the cave by boat during summer months or by skiing and snowmobile in winter, with facilities including a boat dock and campfire site.

The cave maintains a layer of ice that has persisted for centuries due to microclimatic permafrost conditions, keeping winter temperatures throughout summer months.
