Ukonsaari

Ukonsaari is a rocky island in Lake Inari that rises steeply above the water with boulder fields covering much of its surface. The island contains caves that served as ceremonial spaces and are still visible during visits.

The island was first explored by archaeologists in the late 1800s who discovered medieval artifacts within its caves. Evidence suggests the site was used for religious practices across several centuries.

The Inari Sami people considered this location their principal sacred center where ceremonies took place and reindeer antlers were left as offerings. The site held deep spiritual significance throughout the centuries as a place of religious devotion.

The island is reached by boat tours that operate during summer months departing from a nearby museum location. Access is available only through organized visits, so check tour schedules ahead of your visit.

Deer bones found in the caves reveal that sacrifice rituals took place here across several centuries. These remains provide insight into the religious customs of an ancient culture.
