The rocky island rises 30 meters above Lake Inarijärvi with steep walls and boulder fields visible from considerable distances across the water.
British archaeologist Arthur Evans discovered a silver filigree head ornament from the 13th century Russia during his 1873 exploration of the island's caves.
The Inari Sami people maintained this location as their principal sacred site, performing ceremonies and leaving offerings of reindeer antlers through centuries.
Tourists can reach the island through guided boat tours departing from Siida Sami Museum harbor during summer months, located 11 kilometers from Inari village.
Radiocarbon dating revealed sacrificial activities occurred between the 14th and 17th centuries, with numerous deer bones found in the island's ceremonial caves.
