Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church, Wooden church in Inari, Finland.

Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church is a wooden structure nestled in a birch forest beside Lake Pielpajärvi, displaying traditional Nordic architecture with a distinctive red exterior. Its interior features simple wooden furnishings and elements typical of churches from its era, unchanged by modern modifications.

This structure was built in 1760 on the location of an earlier church from 1646, functioning as the spiritual center for local residents until the late 1800s. The continuous presence of worship sites at this spot for over 150 years underscores its importance to the region.

The church holds deep meaning for the Sami community, who gather here to celebrate seasonal festivals and maintain their spiritual traditions. Local people use the space to connect their Christian faith with customary practices passed down through generations.

Access is via a marked 5-kilometer hiking trail starting from the Sarviniementie parking area near Inari village. The path passes through forest terrain and is easier to walk in dry weather, making sturdy footwear advisable.

The church interior operates entirely without electricity, relying solely on daylight filtering through windows to illuminate its wooden surfaces and fixtures. This original quality creates a distinct sense of timeless spirituality during a visit.
