The parish was established in May 1932, initially managed by the Capuchin Order before transitioning to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and later to diocesan priests.
The cathedral holds regular services that incorporate Indonesian traditions while maintaining the Roman Catholic liturgical practices of the Latin rite.
Eight parish churches operate under the cathedral's administration, including locations in Lebang, Merakai, Nobal, Tanjung Baung, Tempunak, Dedai, and Kelam.
The Diocese of Sintang received its current status through Pope John XXIII's bull 'Quod Christus' in 1961, transforming from its previous position as an apostolic prefecture.
