Qesem Cave

Qesem Cave, Prehistoric cave in Tel Aviv, Israel

Qesem Cave is a limestone cave near Tel Aviv with several chambers where archaeologists have found thousands of objects from prehistory. The site spans multiple levels and shows different layers with finds from various time periods.

The cave was discovered by chance in 2000 during road construction and contains traces of human settlement from hundreds of thousands of years ago. It shows how people returned to this location repeatedly over an extremely long period.

The cave shows how early humans lived and worked here, with traces of tools and daily activities from a distant past. Visitors can see how residents adapted to this location and made use of their surroundings.

The site is accessible to visitors, but tours often take place as guided experiences since archaeological work is still ongoing. It is advisable to check in advance about current visiting options.

The cave contains one of the oldest known hearths where early humans regularly used and controlled fire. This find is one of the most important pieces of evidence that our ancestors could manage fire hundreds of thousands of years ago.
