Monastery of the Holy Cross, Orthodox monastery in Valley of the Cross, Jerusalem
The monastery complex contains a chapel, living quarters, courtyards, and a museum within its fortress-like structure below the Israel Museum and Knesset.
The first basilica on the site dates to the fourth century, when Emperor Constantine granted the land to King Mirian III of Kartli.
The monastery walls display medieval frescoes, including a portrait of Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli, who composed The Knight in the Panther's Skin.
The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate manages the monastery, which includes a museum displaying historical artifacts, a coffee shop, and a gift shop.
According to legend, the monastery stands where Adam's head was buried, from which grew the tree that provided wood for the cross of Christ.
