Rihan forest, Protected forest and nature reserve in northern Israel.
Rihan Forest is a protected woodland and nature reserve in the Galilee region of northern Israel. The terrain is shaped by Mediterranean vegetation, with oak trees, strawberry trees, and native shrubs covering the hillsides.
The forest was given official protection status in 1991, which secured its conservation for future generations. It was later nominated as part of a broader area for the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List.
The forest sits close to Arab villages where many plants growing here are familiar as cooking herbs or folk remedies. Walking through, visitors sometimes notice traces of how local communities have long used this land.
The forest is best explored on foot using the marked trails that wind through the woodland and open terrain. Sturdy shoes and enough water are a good idea, particularly in summer when the heat can be intense.
Rihan Forest is one of the few places in Israel where remnants of an ancient Mediterranean oak woodland survive largely in their original form. This type of forest once covered much of the Levant but has become rare across the region.
