Old Akko wall, Stone fortification in Acre, Israel.
The Akko wall is a stone fortification that surrounds the ancient port city along the Mediterranean coast. It is made up of several sections with stone bastions positioned strategically to protect the settlement.
The wall was rebuilt in the 18th century by Ottoman rulers, who reused stones from an earlier Crusader fortress. This rebuilding created a double structure with earth between the layers, strengthening its defensive power.
The walls show traces of different peoples who lived and built here, from the Phoenicians to the Ottomans. You can see this layered history in the varying stone types and construction methods stacked upon one another.
Access to the wall is through marked entrances, and viewing points are positioned along the route. From these spots you can see both the Mediterranean and the city below.
The western Poterna section holds hidden tunnels that served as escape routes over the centuries. Local residents used these passages during sieges and times of conflict.
