Barabar Caves, Ancient caves in India
The Barabar Caves are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India.
They date back to the Maurya Empire (322–185 BCE), specifically to the reign of Ashoka (273–232 BCE).
The caves were used by ascetics from the Ajivika sect, founded by Makkhali Gosala, a contemporary of Gautama Buddha.
The caves are located in the Jehanabad district of Bihar, India.
The interior of the caves is highly polished, creating a mirror effect.
