Lion Capital of Asoka, Ancient sculpture in India

The Lion Capital of Ashoka is a sculpture of four Asiatic lions standing back to back.

It was originally placed atop the Ashoka pillar at Sarnath, by Emperor Ashoka in about 250 BCE.

The capital is now the national emblem of India and the wheel "Ashoka Chakra" from its base features on the Indian flag.

The original sculpture is preserved in the Sarnath Museum in India.

Despite weathering and damage, the intricate detailing and symmetry of the lions remain visible.

Inception: 250 BCE

Material: sandstone
