Karol Bagh

Karol Bagh is a neighborhood in Central Delhi with long streets full of shops, markets, and smaller businesses along several main parallel roads. The area feels densely built, with storefronts at ground level and apartments above, while wide avenues guide traffic through the district.

The neighborhood developed from the 1920s on former garden land, as surrounding villages were relocated to make room for the city's expansion. Initially a residential area for middle-class families, its character changed over the decades with the growth of shops and commercial businesses.

The name comes from the Karol Singh family, who owned land here in the early decades of the twentieth century and started development. Religious buildings from different faiths stand close to one another, showing how different communities have lived and worked in the same neighborhood for generations.

The metro station connects to several lines and sits close to the largest shopping streets, making orientation easy. The district is best visited during the day, when the markets are open and the streets are busy.

Ghaffar Market offers wholesale prices on textiles, cosmetics, and electronics, drawing traders from several states who buy here for their own stores. Some of the market's lanes are so narrow that you can almost touch the stacked goods as you pass by.
