Hugli-Chinsurah extends along the Hooghly River, positioned 35 kilometers north of Kolkata, forming a densely populated urban center in West Bengal.
Portuguese traders established the settlement in 1579 after receiving permission from Mughal Emperor Akbar, making it the first European trading post in Bengal.
The city contains the Hooghly Imambara, constructed between 1841 and 1861, which functions as a congregation hall displaying Indo-Persian architectural elements.
Multiple railway stations, including Chinsurah, Hooghly, and Bandel Junction, connect the city to major destinations across West Bengal and neighboring regions.
The Dutch Cemetery and Fort Gustavus remnants stand as physical reminders of the Dutch East India Company presence in Chinsurah from 1656 to 1825.
