Jubilee Bridge, Railway bridge in Hooghly district, India.
Jubilee Bridge is a railway bridge spanning the Hooghly River between Naihati and Bandel, carrying two train tracks for regional transportation. The steel structure measures roughly 415 meters and connects these two towns in West Bengal.
The bridge was built between 1882 and 1887 and opened during celebrations for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. It became the first permanent crossing over the Hooghly River at that location.
The bridge stands near the sacred Hooghly River, a western branch of the Ganges, and people view the site as part of an important religious geography. Many travelers stop here to acknowledge this spiritual connection when crossing the river.
The bridge no longer carries train traffic after regional service shifted to the adjacent Sampreeti Bridge in 2016. You can still view the structure and cross the river on foot, making it easy to observe the engineering and enjoy views of the river below.
The structure was built entirely through riveting, without using any nuts or bolts in assembly. This handcrafted construction method shows the engineering skill of the late 1800s.
