Basilica of the Holy-Rosary, church in West Bengal, India

The Basilica of the Holy Rosary, known as Bandel Church, is built of reddish-brown brick with cream and red striped arches and trim. A square tower with a clock face and cross rises on the left, and a curved portico with striped bands, a small pediment and a cross marks the centre. Inside are three altars, several tombstones, a pipe organ and a shrine to Mary; a ship's mast stands in front.

Portuguese settlers used Bandel as a port from the mid-16th century, and in 1579 built a fort, Fort Ugolim, with Augustinian friars. The first church, raised in 1599, was burnt during the Mughal sacking of Hooghly in 1632; Gomez de Soto rebuilt it in 1660. Pope John Paul II declared it a minor basilica on 25 November 1988.

The church stands in Bandel, Hooghly district, beside the Hooghly river, and is reached from Chinsurah or Bandel station. The ship's mast given by a rescued captain stands in front of the facade, and the 1599 keystone of the first church is set in the eastern gate of the monastery. Three altars, several tombstones, a pipe organ and a shrine to Mary are inside.
