Dimmuborgir, Lava field near Lake Mývatn, Iceland.

Dimmuborgir is a volcanic lava field east of Lake Mývatn filled with dark, jagged rock formations that create an intricate maze of caves, pillars, and natural arches. The landscape consists of twisted basalt shapes that form natural passages and towering structures throughout the site.

The lava field took shape roughly 2,300 years ago when molten rock flowed over water, triggering steam explosions that hollowed out chambers and pillars in the cooling stone. These violent geological processes created the complex rock landscape that exists today.

Local folklore connects this place to darker spiritual beliefs, with the name translating to Dark Castles. The twisted rock formations and shadowy passages have long captured people's imagination as a place of mystery.

Visitors can explore the site using marked walking paths, with the Kirkjuhringurinn trail stretching about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) to a prominent cave formation. The ground is uneven and can be slippery, so sturdy footwear and careful footing are essential.

The rock formations here were used as filming locations for scenes in the television series Game of Thrones, bringing international attention to the site. This connection to popular culture has made it a destination for fans of the show.
