Reynisdrangar, Basalt sea stacks in Vik i Myrdal, Iceland

Reynisdrangar are three massive black basalt rock formations that rise about 66 meters (216 feet) from the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Vik i Myrdal. The stacks create a dramatic sight when viewed from Reynisfjara beach, with steep cliffs and columnar rock structures visible from the shore.

The rock formations originated from volcanic eruptions occurring beneath glacial ice during the penultimate Ice Age. Successive lava flows and pyroclastic deposits built up these structures over time through alternating layers of different volcanic materials.

Local folklore narrates that two trolls attempted to pull a ship to land but turned to stone when sunlight touched them at dawn.

These rocks are best viewed from Reynisfjara beach, where you can walk along the shore to see them up close. Always stay alert near the water as waves can appear suddenly and sweep across the beach without warning.

From April through August, thousands of seabirds nest on the cliffs, including puffins, auks, fulmars, and kittiwakes. This nesting season turns the rocks into a living bird sanctuary that draws wildlife watchers.
