Mývatn, nature reserve in north Iceland, Iceland
Mývatn is a shallow lake in North Iceland surrounded by volcanic landforms. The area displays signs of volcanic activity everywhere, with hot springs, sulfur vents, and lava fields that create a diverse mosaic landscape.
The lake formed about 2,300 years ago during a major lava eruption when flowing lava blocked a river and created new craters. Water filled these depressions to form the lake, while volcanic activity continues to shape the entire region to this day.
The name Mývatn refers to the tiny midges that swarm here in great numbers during summer months. Visitors notice these insects hovering everywhere around the water and plants, which makes the site an important habitat for these creatures and the birds that feed on them.
The area is easily accessible by car from Akureyri and other locations in northeast Iceland, with good roads year-round. The best way to explore is to drive around the lake and stop at various viewpoints, or walk through individual areas like Hverfjall or Dimmuborgir.
The area has been used as a filming location for major productions like Star Wars and Game of Thrones, with the volcanic and rocky landscape serving as a perfect backdrop for otherworldly or ancient settings. These sites were chosen specifically for their unique geological features that resemble no other place on Earth.
