Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy.
It's best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The volcano has also been depicted in numerous works of literature and music, as well as film and television.
Today, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Italy with approximately 2.5 million visitors every year.
Vesuvius is the only volcano in mainland Europe to have erupted within the last hundred years.
