Castel del Monte, Castle in Apulia, Italy
Castel del Monte is a 13th-century citadel situated on a hill in Andria in the Apulia region of southeast Italy.
It was built by the Emperor Frederick II during the 1240s.
The castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996 and is depicted on the Italian version of the one-cent euro coin.
Visitors can explore the castle's unique octagonal shape and its eight octagonal towers.
Despite being called a 'castle', it was never used for defense purposes and lacks certain defensive features.
