Colossus of Barletta, Bronze statue near Santo Sepolcro Basilica, Barletta, Italy
This 4.5-meter bronze statue represents an imperial figure wearing military attire, a gemmed diadem, and traditional Roman emperor garments at Santo Sepolcro square.
The statue dates from the 5th century and was likely created to commemorate Emperor Theodosius II during the thirtieth anniversary of his reign in 439.
Locals named the statue Eraclio, and it became the central figure of numerous traditions, legends, and historical narratives throughout Barletta's development.
The statue stands outdoors near the left side of Santo Sepolcro Basilica, making it accessible for visitors throughout the day without entrance fees.
Scientific analysis revealed no traces of iodine in the bronze, disproving the legend of its recovery from the sea after a Venetian shipwreck.
