National Central Library of Florence, National library in Santa Croce district, Florence, Italy

The National Central Library holds six million books, 25,000 manuscripts, and 4,000 incunabula within a prominent building along the Arno River.

Antonio Magliabechi donated 30,000 volumes to establish the library in 1714, which opened to the public in 1747 as the Magliabechiana.

The library preserves significant Italian literary works, including manuscripts by Petrarch and Boccaccio, while coordinating cataloging efforts across Italian institutions.

The building provides open access to researchers and visitors, requiring no special permissions to explore its extensive collections and digital resources.

The 1966 Arno flood damaged one-third of the collection, leading to the creation of an internal restoration center that continues operations today.
