Originally commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family, it was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle.

The Castel Sant'Angelo is depicted in the opera 'Tosca' by Puccini, where it is the setting for the final act.

Today, the structure is a museum that offers panoramic views of Rome.

The building was once the tallest in Rome.
