Rafenstein, Castle ruin in Bolzano, Italy.
The medieval fortification stands on a rocky hill at the entrance of Val Sarentino valley, commanding views over the city of Bolzano and its surroundings.
Bishop Friedrich von Wangen of Trento constructed the castle in the 13th century to control trade routes between northern and southern regions through Bolzano.
The structure includes a great hall, a low donjon, and circular walls, with additional Gothic architecture elements added during the 16th-century renovation phase.
Visitors can access the castle ruins via a steep road from San Genesio, with guided tours available in Italian, German, and English for groups of 20 people.
The castle housed a collection of rare objects, including polished horns and ostrich eggs, with a Nile crocodile specimen discovered during later excavations.
