The Venetian Arsenal contains multiple shipyards and armories within a 45-hectare fortified compound surrounded by thick defensive walls.
Construction started in 1104, making the Arsenal the largest pre-industrial manufacturing center in Europe, producing ships through an early assembly line system.
The facility earned recognition in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, which described the intense activities of shipbuilders and craftsmen within its walls.
The Arsenal currently operates as a naval base and research center, opening specific sections to visitors during the Venice Biennale art exhibitions.
During the 16th century, the Arsenal employed 16,000 workers who manufactured naval vessels using standardized parts, completing one ship per day.
