San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, Medieval church in Dorsoduro district, Venice, Italy

The interior of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli contains a central nave with gilded wooden statues and Corinthian columns featuring hooked bills on their capitals.

Founded in the 7th century, the church underwent substantial reconstruction in the 12th century and received its current bell tower addition in 1764.

The name 'dei Mendicoli' refers to the poor fishermen who inhabited this area of Venice and were known as the Nicolotti community.

The church includes drainage channels around the altar area and waterproof membranes under the marble paving to protect against Venice's frequent flooding.

The church interior served as a filming location for the 1973 psychological thriller 'Don't Look Now' directed by Nicolas Roeg.
