Statua della Libertà, Marble statue in Piazza della Libertà, San Marino.
The Liberty Statue in Piazza della Libertà is a marble figure carved from white Carrara marble that portrays a female warrior moving forward. Her right hand extends outward while her left hand grips a flag.
A German noblewoman named Otilia Heyroth Wagener donated this work to San Marino in 1876. In recognition of this generous gift, she was granted the title of Duchess of Acquaviva.
The statue depicts a woman wearing a crown featuring three towers that represent the fortified city of San Marino. This same symbol appears on the nation's coat of arms.
The statue stands at the center of the main square, positioned between Parva Domus and Palazzo Pubblico in San Marino's capital city. You can find it easily by heading to the heart of the historic center.
This work appears on San Marino's 2-cent euro coins, setting it apart from the more famous New York counterpart. The sculpture shows a neoclassical warrior rather than the allegorical freedom symbol recognized around the world.
