Welcome to the touristic guide of the San Pietro Church in Savona, Italy. This church is located on Via Untoria, in a part of the medieval historic center of Savona near the ancient Porta Bellaria. The San Pietro Church was built by the Carmelite Fathers who were in Savona since 1628. In 1677, thanks to a bequest of 15,000 Roman scudi from Monsignor Francesco Raimondo, they completed the construction of a church on Via Untoria dedicated to the Madonna del Carmelo, adjacent to their convent. In 1802, the parish title of the nearby San Pietro Church near the port was transferred here following its demolition. This ancient San Pietro Church from 1543 to 1556 served as the cathedral. Since 1684, the current San Pietro Church has been erected in the Archpriesthood. The building is 30 meters long and 16 meters wide with a single nave in Baroque style, an apse with a wooden choir, and four side altars. It was designed by the Savonese architect Battista Testa and realized by the expert of the Serenissima Republic of Genoa since 1644. A peculiar characteristic of the church is the absence of a dome surmounting the altar. This was due to a precise imposition by the Genoese military authority, in order to have an unobstructed view of the city from inside the nearby Priamar fortress. The interior is richly frescoed and gilded by Gerolamo Brusco, Domenico Buscaglia, and Pietro Delucchi. There are preserved canvases by Domenico Parodi, Agostino Ratti, and Domenico Piola.
