Mausoleum of Ummidia Quadratilla, ancient Roman archaeological site
Welcome to the touristic guide of the Ummidia Quadratilla Mausoleum, located in the archaeological area of Cassino. This powerful structure is situated on the southeastern slopes of Montecassino and is incorporated into the walls of what was once the city of Casinum. Built with large squared blocks perfectly connected without mortar, held together only by lead clamps inside, this mausoleum has withstood the test of time, earthquakes, and even war without suffering substantial damage. The floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, with symmetrical arms, a rather low arch, and a perfectly circular vault without windows - except for four loopholes corresponding to the arms. This design excludes the theory of a temple and instead suggests a crypt or a noble tomb. Similar examples of Roman tombs and especially the underground crypt structure without windows accessible from outside the city through a dromos confirm this theory. The unfounded hypotheses of past centuries about an Etruscan ancestry of the construction are not supported. Instead, the building presents itself as an interesting anticipation of similar mausoleums that are much later: those of Teodorico and Galla Placidia. The construction dates back to the 1st-2nd century BC. In 1757, a plaque was found that reads: "Ummidia C.F. Quadratilla amphitheater and temple made with her own money for the people of Casinum." Therefore, it was believed that the mausoleum could be identified with the "temple" mentioned in the inscription. Visitors can admire the impressive architecture of the mausoleum, which has survived for centuries. The lack of windows creates a mysterious atmosphere, and the symmetry of the design is impressive. The mausoleum is also an important historical site that provides insight into the funerary practices of ancient Rome. To reach the mausoleum, visitors can take a guided tour or explore the archaeological area of Cassino on their own. The site is easily accessible by car or public transportation. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring water as there are no facilities nearby. In conclusion, the Ummidia Quadratilla Mausoleum is an impressive example of ancient Roman architecture that has stood the test of time. Its unique design and historical significance make it a must-see destination for tourists interested in history and architecture.
