Riserva naturale orientata Capo Peloro

The reserve spans 68 hectares of coastal land where the Tyrrhenian Sea meets the Strait of Messina, featuring two brackish lagoons and sandy beaches.

The Regional Government of Sicily established this protected area in 2001 to safeguard the coastal ecosystem and preserve native aquatic plant species.

Local fishermen maintain traditional practices in the Ganzirri lagoon, continuing centuries-old methods of mussel and clam cultivation in the protected waters.

Visitors can access designated observation points throughout the reserve to watch over 160 species of migratory birds crossing the Strait of Messina.

The reserve contains meromictic basins where surface and deep waters maintain separate layers due to different physical and chemical properties.
