Civic Tower (Castel Goffredo), historic structure
Welcome to Castel Goffredo, a charming town located in the province of Mantua, Italy. Today, we will be exploring one of its most iconic landmarks - the Civic Tower. The Civic Tower is a historic building that can be found in Piazza Mazzini, right in the heart of the town's historic center. It is situated in the part of town that once bordered the ancient fortress of Castelvecchio and has been witness to centuries of political activity. The tower is often considered the symbol of Castel Goffredo and is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. Belonging to the first city walls of the town, the Civic Tower was constructed in 1492, before the elevation. Its foundation dates back to the 13th century and it enclosed the medieval village of Castelvecchio in the southern part. The tower stands at an impressive height of 27 meters, having undergone expansion works over the years. As you approach the tower, you will notice the Palazzo del Vicario on its right side. This building was once a separate structure but has since been incorporated into the Palazzo Gonzaga-Acerbi. On the left side of the tower, you will find the Palazzo Gonzaga-Acerbi and the Palazzo della Ragione. Together, these buildings formed the political center of the town for many years. The Aloysian epigraph on the Civic Tower reads "NE' SUPERBIA IN LA PROSPERA NE VILTA' IN LA ADVERSA" which roughly translates to "Neither pride in prosperity nor cowardice in adversity". This message serves as a reminder of the importance of humility and courage in all situations. You will also notice a marble coat of arms with the Gonzaga weapon affixed to the passing arch of the tower. This was once equipped with a gate and two inscriptions placed on the sides by Aloisio Gonzaga in the first half of the sixteenth century. The public clock on the Civic Tower has been there since 1438 and is still in operation today. It is a testament to the tower's longevity and serves as a reminder of the town's rich history. As you explore the Civic Tower, take a moment to appreciate its impressive architecture and the role it has played in the town's development over the centuries. The tower is open to visitors and offers stunning views of Castel Goffredo from the top. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to experience one of Italy's most historic landmarks.
