Recupero edilizio e funzionale dell'ex carcere delle Murate

The Murate complex spans 14,500 square meters between Via Ghibellina, Via dell'Agnolo, and Viale della Giovine Italia, featuring residential units and cultural spaces.

Built between 1439 and 1443, the structure transformed from a monastery to a prison from 1883 to 1985, before its renovation began in 2001.

The ground floor contains exhibition spaces, artist residencies, and the Murate Art District, which hosts shows, exhibitions, and conferences throughout the year.

The renovation project created 33 housing units for young couples, commercial spaces, and public squares, making the area accessible to residents and visitors.

The European Union recognized this prison transformation through the Reprise network project, connecting six European cities involved in historic prison renovations.
