Amami, Administrative city in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan
Amami is an administrative city on Amami Ōshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, situated between Kyūshū and Okinawa in the East China Sea. The coastal areas of this city stretch along white sand beaches and are surrounded by coral reefs that shape the shallow waters.
The city formed as an administrative merger of several towns in 2006 and now serves as the administrative center of the island region. Before this reorganization, the individual settlements belonged to different smaller administrative units within Kagoshima Prefecture.
The city preserves traditional crafts including the production of Amami Oshima Tsumugi silk fabric, recognized for detailed patterns created through specialized weaving techniques.
Direct flights connect the island to several major Japanese cities, while ferry services offer an alternative route through Kagoshima. Getting around within the city is best done with a rented vehicle, as public transport options are limited.
The forests of the region shelter the Amami rabbit, a nocturnal species found only on a few islands of this archipelago. Mangrove forests along the coast are among the northernmost of their kind worldwide and thrive in a more temperate climate than usual.
