Kakamega County

Kakamega County is an administrative region in Western Kenya featuring rolling hills, thick forests, and farmland across its territory. The area shares borders with six neighboring counties and encompasses diverse landscapes throughout.

The region became an independent administrative unit in 2013 following a constitutional change that replaced the earlier district system. This reorganization reshaped local governance completely.

The Luhya people here shape daily life through farming and craftsmanship, with maize fields dominating the landscape. You encounter traditional music and dances at community gatherings and celebrations throughout the year.

The region has schools and health centers, including a main hospital for serious medical needs. Travel is easiest during dry seasons when roads are more passable.
