Koh Rong is an island off Cambodia's coast covering about 78 square kilometers with 43 kilometers of sandy shores backed by dense jungle and hills rising to 316 meters. The terrain shifts between beach sections, forested inland areas, and elevated zones distributed across the entire landmass.
The island's name comes from an old word for cave or tunnel and was long understood as Shelter Island by early inhabitants. In 2000 it officially became a commune, marking a shift in its administrative status.
