Chongjin

Chongjin is a port and industrial city situated on Kyongsong Bay along the East Sea, featuring steel mills, shipbuilding facilities, and a major commercial port terminal. The city spreads along the coast, connecting residential neighborhoods to manufacturing areas through its infrastructure.

The city developed from a fishing village into a major industrial center during Japanese occupation between 1910 and 1945. This shift from a traditional coastal economy to modern manufacturing fundamentally shaped the city's character and infrastructure.

The North Hamgyong Provincial Theater hosts performances of Korean opera and traditional dance throughout the year, giving visitors a chance to experience classical arts in a local setting.
