Hyesan

Hyesan is the capital of Ryanggang Province and sits on the upper course of the Yalu River. The city serves as a key administrative and transportation hub in this border region.

The settlement began as a fortress during the Choson dynasty and later developed into a military stronghold. Over time, it transformed into the province's main administrative center.

The Hyesan mine extracts copper, producing significant mineral resources that account for eighty percent of North Korea's total copper deposits.

The city is linked to other regions through three railway lines operated by the Korean State Railway. An international bridge also crosses the Yalu River connecting to China.

The area has experienced extremely low temperatures, placing it among the coldest locations in the country. These harsh conditions greatly shape the climate and daily life in the region.
