Cherung Royal Tomb, Royal burial tomb in Kaesong, North Korea
Cherung Royal Tomb is a royal burial site in Kaesong consisting of a mound raised above a carved granite base. A ceremonial path runs from the entrance to the main structure, bordered by arranged stone figures and architectural elements.
Queen Sinui, the first wife of Joseon dynasty founder Yi Song-gye, was buried here after her death in 1392. Along with a nearby royal tomb, this represents one of only two Joseon royal burial sites found within present-day North Korea's borders.
Stone figures of military officers and Confucian officials line the approach path, reflecting the social order that mattered during the Joseon dynasty. These statues show how Korean burial customs honored both martial and scholarly roles.
The site is located in Kaesong, a city with multiple historical locations, and is accessible from the city center. Visitors should wear suitable walking shoes since the approach path crosses uneven terrain and must be explored on foot.
The tomb occupies its original location in Gaegyeong, the former capital of the Goryeo dynasty. Queen Sinui was interred at this site years before her husband established the Joseon dynasty and she received her royal title.
